  • Interview with TOZI Victoria’s Head Chef Maurilio Molteni

This week we caught up with TOZI Victoria’s Head Chef Maurilio Molteni, to talk about what sparked his interest in cooking, his cooking style and much more. Can you take us back to the beginning, what first sparked your passion for cooking? Since a young age, I used to sit around the kitchen table watching my mum cooking in Italy, she is a fantastic cook, from fresh pasta to roasts and cakes she can do anything! We used to go food shopping together, fresh vegetables, meat, fish, I was only 8 years old and I said to my mum when I'm older I want to be a chef, the rest is history! What was the food culture like in your home growing up, and how did it influence your career? As I said, every single dish was home-cooked by my mum, always using seasonal ingredients bought from farmers, butchers and fishmongers, no supermarkets! That was really important to me and now I do the same in my kitchen at work. How would you describe your cooking style in three words? Minimum fuss, maximum flavour! Italian food is seasonal, no messing around, few ingredients cooked well! Where do you draw inspiration from when developing new dishes? I love regional food, I was lucky enough to travel a lot which I think is really important for a Chef. I tried to respect the seasons and the ingredients available. I have a great relationship with my suppliers which helps me a lot along with young chefs working with me and bringing their own experiences and ideas. How do you stay inspired and continue evolving creatively over the years? I love to go out to eat, not just Italian food, Thai and Japanese are my favourites! I speak a lot with my colleagues, do a lot of tastings and try to always be aware of new cooking techniques and different ingredients. Also I'm lucky to work with young talented chefs that keep pushing me. What would your ideal day in London be like? Go for a nice walk in the morning, do some food shopping in Borough market, get a nice pint of lager with some street food, then go home and cook something nice for my family. Then have a glass of nice Italian wine and relax watching a good film. Very simple. For more information on TOZI Victoria or to book click here . Photography courtesy of TOZI Victoria

  • Review of Agrodolce in Charlotte Street

Agrodolce is one of those places that instantly makes you feel at ease. Tucked away on Fitzrovia’s Charlotte Street, it’s got that relaxed lived-in charm that seems straight out of a family-run spot in Rome; Italian hospitality and seriously good food. From the moment we walked through the door the vibe was warm and welcoming, from the host to the waitress and the bar team, everyone took a moment to smile and say hello. We were struggling to decide what to order so our server offered to bring us a selection of their favourite vegetarian dishes, which really was the perfect way to get a feel of the menu. Glass of prosecco in hand, we kicked things off with a selection of starters. Focaccia; topped with rosemary and sea salt and Supplì; crispy Roman rice balls with gooey mozzarella inside (essentially like a super fancy risotto ball). I love these in any context, and they are a sign of a real Italian spot for me, definitely one not to be missed. We also had the Crocchette di Patate; potato croquettes which were peppery, cheesy, and completely addictive. To balance out our selection of delicious but indulgent starters, we were also treated to some super fresh vegetable sides which really were a step above the norm. We had Cicoria Ripassata alla Romana; sautéed chicory with garlic, olive oil, and a bit of chilli. Slightly bitter and totally delicious, this was a standout dish even in its simplicity. The seasonal Carciofo alla Romana (Roman-style artichoke) was tender, lemony, and packed with flavour. We also had the Agrodolce Salad, which was a real creative twist on the humble seasonal salad; fresh spinach with orange, fennel, almonds and raisins. Sweet, sharp, crunchy, all the right flavours. Of course, we couldn't leave without sampling their authentic pasta, and I can honestly say I was chuffed when they brought out one of my favourites; Cacio e Pepe. This dish is an example of Italian simplicity at its finest, literally pepper, cheese and pasta, but every restaurant has its own style of making it and this one was a 10/10 for me. Rich and creamy but without being heavy, slightly al dente pasta, just perfect. We finished things off with a classic Tiramisù to share. Light, creamy, just enough of a coffee kick, exactly what you want at the end of a meal like that. Food full of heart, kind and unpretentious service and truly authentic Italian style, Agrodolce feels like you’ve stumbled across a little slice of Italy in the middle of London. We’ll be back to this authentic Italian gem! For more information or to book click here . Address: 67 Charlotte St., London W1T 4PH Written by Jordan Crowley Photos courtesy of Agrodolce

  • Review of KIBOU’s new summer menu

KIBOU’s latest menu is a fresh and fun celebration of Japanese cuisine, served with style. Stepping into KIBOU in Battersea, you’re immediately drawn into a vibrant space where Japan-inspired street art wraps the walls in bold colour and energy. The new summer menu reflects this mood: vibrant, flavourful, and designed for sharing. We went to KIBOU on a particularly hot day, so we were really keen on our drinks being as refreshing as possible. We went for the iced tea pitchi, a blend of cold brew jasmine tea, peach, and lemon, and it delivered exactly what we needed. We also tried the Cucumber Saleswoman, a cocktail mixing tequila, lime, pear, and cucumber for a crisp, cooling effect. The food arrives as it’s ready, covering the table in a variety of small, colourful plates, which gave our dinner a feast-like feel. Among the standout new dishes, the snow crab uramaki was a highlight: avocado and cucumber encased in rice and sesame, topped with a sweet, delicate snow crab mixture, tobiko, coriander, and a hint of chilli. Bluefin tuna chutoro sashimi followed, ever the proof that the simplest things work best. It offered pure flavour and buttery richness that needed nothing else, besides another serving. For something heartier, the chicken zangi, a Hokkaido-style fried chicken, came crisp and golden, with sweet-sour heat and a tangy lift from the fresh lime. We also had to try KIBOU’s reimagined classic, the sesame prawn toast bao: fluffy, savoury, and dressed with KIBOU’s signature sauce. Finally, we had the black pork katsu: crisp panko-coated pork with a sauce full of layered umami. For dessert, the yuzu cheesecake delivered a creamy texture cut with a bright, citrusy tang. However, we were particularly impressed by the sesame tiramisu and how well the bitterness of the coffee paired with the rich flavours and soft feel of the sesame-infused airy mascarpone. KIBOU’s new Spring/Summer menu brings together bold flavours and playful presentation. With a focus on sharing and variety, it offers a relaxed yet elevated way to explore Japanese cuisine, through crisp street food, delicate sashimi, or inventive desserts. • Review of the summer menu at Mildreds

I honestly never miss a chance to visit Mildreds, so heading to the Camden restaurant to sample their new menu was a no brainer for me. At 8:30pm on a Friday night, the place was absolutely buzzing; lively and energetic, but not chaotic, the staff here have a way about them, keeping a calm atmosphere even when it’s heaving. It’s a beautiful venue; warm, stylish feel with exposed brick and subtle greenery, giving it that laid back Camden edge without being too try hard. Seated and given the menu, packed with globally inspired vegetarian and vegan dishes, Mildreds is a plant lover's dream. We started with the teriyaki cauliflower cups; crispy crumbed florets in a tangy tamarind soy glaze, served in baby gem lettuce with carrot daikon pickles and a sharp wasabi mayo. They were bright, crunchy, and pretty additive, coupled with the masala aubergine; roasted then grilled until meltingly soft, layered with pineapple raita, cherry tomato chutney, mint coriander chutney, soft herbs, and crispy fried garlic. For mains we shared a salad and one of the infamous Mildreds burgers. The Green Tofu Queen Salad was a fresh, vibrant bowl of goodness. With pea, broccoli, cucumber, sweet potato, sweetcorn, jalapeño, and lettuce, it was a great mix of crunch and freshness, topped with roast saffron tofu, a creamy avocado dressing, seeds, and crispy nacho strips for texture. Salads can sometimes be a bit boring and not feel like a real main, but this one really was a feast. We also got the Korean fried chick+n burger which isn’t actually a new addition, but I really can’t go there without ordering it; crispy plant-based chick+n patty glazed with gochujang chilli sesame sauce, layered with crunchy slaw, sharp kimchi, and a stack of golden onion rings. Truly the don of all vegan burgers. We rounded things off with the white chocolate tiramisu, and it was the perfect finish. Almond sponge soaked in coffee, layered with a light white chocolate mousse it was a clever vegan twist on the classic, not overly sweet, and incredibly moreish. To be honest by this point we were completely stuffed but I’m a big tiramisu fan so I can’t turn down the chance to try one. Cocktails were well crafted, we had the yuzu margarita, as well as classic spicy margarita’s which the bar kindly made for us even though they weren’t on the menu. Whether you're plant based or just looking for an inclusive meal to fit a cross-section of diets and preferences, Mildreds Camden delivers big flavour in a buzzing, welcoming space. They have venues around London so check out their website for other locations. To book or for more information click here . • Review of HERA in Stratford Cross

Tucked away in the vibrant Stratford Cross, just moments from the striking new V&A East and a short stroll from The Everyman Cinema, HERA is a spacious, contemporary Greek restaurant that blends style, flavour, and atmosphere in perfect harmony. Step inside and you’re immediately struck by the stunning interior: soaring double-height ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, and plush velvet seating that invites you to settle in. Softly glowing lanterns hang above, while the open kitchen adds a lively touch, offering a front-row view of the chefs in action. It’s sleek and modern, yet undeniably warm and inviting. On a balmy summer evening, it was impossible to resist the allure of the outdoor seating. Still, I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful interior as I passed through—it’s the kind of space that makes you want to linger. Our experience began with a warm welcome from our friendly and knowledgeable waitress, who was more than happy to recommend her favourite dishes. I started with the Smoked Aubergine—a plate as pretty as it was flavourful. Topped with za’atar honey and truffle oil and finished with delicate yellow petals and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. It was rich in flavour, smokey and the sesame seeds added a little bite to the dish. Truly delicious. For the main course, I chose the Grilled Seabass with Lemon Oil. Cooked to perfection, the fish was tender with a satisfyingly crisp skin. Light yet satisfying, every bite was fresh, zesty, and moreish. Dessert was a mixed bag—my Semolina Halva with Chocolate Sauce was a little too subtle for my taste, though fans of traditional Greek halva may appreciate its earthy sweetness. Luckily, my dining companion was happy to share her Loukoumades—golden dough balls drizzled in lemon honey and dusted with cinnamon and pistachios. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and drenched in just the right amount of syrup. Sweet, indulgent, and completely addictive. Service throughout the evening was faultless—warm, attentive, and accommodating, with great menu insight and thoughtful attention to my dietary requirements. HERA is a true hidden gem in Stratford. With exceptional Greek food, standout service, and interiors that effortlessly balance elegance and comfort, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again—whether for a laid-back date night, a stylish dinner with friends, or a solo treat after shopping at Westfield. Look out for the iconic plate-smashing ceremony and the new four-course set menu at HERA's monthly Greek Night. You will enjoy Greek goddess-themed dancers and a live band. Taking place on the last Friday of every month. Address: 4 Arber Way, Straford, E20 1JS To book, visit https://herarestaurant.co.uk Written by Nyla S.
