Review of Agrodolce in Charlotte Street

Agrodolce is one of those places that instantly makes you feel at ease. Tucked away on Fitzrovia’s Charlotte Street, it’s got that relaxed lived-in charm that seems straight out of a family-run spot in Rome; Italian hospitality and seriously good food.

From the moment we walked through the door the vibe was warm and welcoming, from the host to the waitress and the bar team, everyone took a moment to smile and say hello. We were struggling to decide what to order so our server offered to bring us a selection of their favourite vegetarian dishes, which really was the perfect way to get a feel of the menu.

Glass of prosecco in hand, we kicked things off with a selection of starters. Focaccia; topped with rosemary and sea salt and Supplì; crispy Roman rice balls with gooey mozzarella inside (essentially like a super fancy risotto ball). I love these in any context, and they are a sign of a real Italian spot for me, definitely one not to be missed. We also had the Crocchette di Patate; potato croquettes which were peppery, cheesy, and completely addictive.

To balance out our selection of delicious but indulgent starters, we were also treated to some super fresh vegetable sides which really were a step above the norm. We had Cicoria Ripassata alla Romana; sautéed chicory with garlic, olive oil, and a bit of chilli. Slightly bitter and totally delicious, this was a standout dish even in its simplicity. The seasonal Carciofo alla Romana (Roman-style artichoke) was tender, lemony, and packed with flavour. We also had the Agrodolce Salad, which was a real creative twist on the humble seasonal salad; fresh spinach with orange, fennel, almonds and raisins. Sweet, sharp, crunchy, all the right flavours.

Of course, we couldn't leave without sampling their authentic pasta, and I can honestly say I was chuffed when they brought out one of my favourites; Cacio e Pepe. This dish is an example of Italian simplicity at its finest, literally pepper, cheese and pasta, but every restaurant has its own style of making it and this one was a 10/10 for me. Rich and creamy but without being heavy, slightly al dente pasta, just perfect. We finished things off with a classic Tiramisù to share. Light, creamy, just enough of a coffee kick, exactly what you want at the end of a meal like that.

Food full of heart, kind and unpretentious service and truly authentic Italian style, Agrodolce feels like you’ve stumbled across a little slice of Italy in the middle of London. We’ll be back to this authentic Italian gem!
