  • Skylight Peckham – Review

Tucked away next to Peckham Library is this must-visit hidden gem – Skylight. The stylishly decorated rooftop bar leads out onto a terrace with sweeping views of London. With the evenings getting brighter, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and watch the sunset across the city. Skylight’s menu offers bar snacks, lunch, dinner, and a Saturday & Sunday brunch menu. I visited on Sunday morning for brunch – the brunch menu is relatively small but has all the classics, a selection of Avocado Toast, French Toast, Burrata, a Quinoa Bowl, and Mushrooms and Eggs on toast. I ordered the French Toast with Mulled Wine, Poached Pear, Cardamom Maple Syrup, Toasted Hazelnuts and Vanilla Chantilly Cream, which was delicious. My Oat Milk Latte arrived in a huge cup and saucer for easy drinking and I also ordered a ‘Strawberries Not Cream’ vegan breakfast cocktail, which I couldn’t believe was vegan. The lunch menu is served Mon – Fri 12 pm – 5 pm and includes a selection of Toast options, Toasties and Burgers. There are also Oysters available for the fancier among us. The dinner menu is available Wednesday through to Sunday evenings from 6pm and is very much small plates and sharing menu. There are vegan and vegetarian options, but there’s more of a focus on meat and oysters. The drinks menu is vast, including signature cocktails, summer drinks, classics, and lots of non-alcoholic options. There’s a large selection of whites, rosés, reds and sparkling wines ranging from £24 – £490 (there’s Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon on the menu as well), making Skylight the perfect place for some celebration drinks. There’s also a selection of draught ciders and beers (and bottles and cans), and the menu also boasts gluten-free and non-alcoholic beers, so there’s something for everyone. Bottomless Brunch is also available from £39.00 pp every Saturday and Sunday between 10am – 6pm. The brunch package includes bottles of Prosecco on arrival, unlimited access to the Bloody Mary Cart, and a choice of a brunch main course. This would be the perfect bottomless venue when the weather is a little bit warmer, and you could sit outside on the terrace in the sun! Skylight also hosts ‘Skylight Sessions’ every Sunday, which is live music from a band and regular DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s also worth noting that you can work from Skylight! It’s the perfect place to work with fast wifi, comfortable seating, delicious coffee, pastries and their lunch menu. £10 per day will get you unlimited coffees & teas, fast wifi and a power plug to charge your devices. • Imad’s Syrian kitchen – Review

Located on the top floor of the bustling Kingly court, Imad’s Syrian Kitchen is a real hidden gem! Serving up Syria’s favourite dishes with a twist. The menu includes a range of small plates and meze alongside large plates which is encouraged to share. This is one of those restaurants which has a story behind them and an important story to tell. Chef Imad Alarnab owned several restaurants and a juice bar in Damascus which were destroyed during the Syrian war. Forced to flee the country, and after a long journey, Imad arrived in the UK where he worked as a car salesman. Unfulfilled, he found his way back to his passion of cooking, hosting supper clubs and pop-ups, along with raising money to help refugees. The popularity of his delicious food later led him to open his first permanent space in Kingly Court. Visiting at lunchtime during the week, Imad’s was already busy inside, and there is a real warmth when you enter. The staff are friendly and welcoming and Chef Imad is walking around the restaurant, making sure his diners are looked after, I saw him greet some of his regulars while I was there, this is a good sign that I was in for a real treat. The interior is a mix of wooden furnishing, white walls and blue painted window panes and doors. The colours have been thought through carefully to create a relaxed dining environment. There’s an open kitchen at the back, where you can see (and smell) the food being made, get there early and you may be able to bag yourself a table near the open kitchen. There is a good selection of small plates to try, I opted for the Baba Ghanoj and I must say it’s one of the best I have ever tasted! Scattered pomegranate seeds add pops of sweetness through the smokiness of the creamy Baba Ghanoj. It’s so moreish, I devoured it with a fluffy warm pitta. My second small plate was the Zahraa Harra – baked cauliflower, with roasted red onions and red peppers, crispy garlic, with mixed spices. All the vegetables, mixed with spices and Thani sauce brings this creamy and indulgent dish alive. I also choose the Jaj Barghol from the large plates section, grilled chicken thigh served on bulgur wheat, cooked with mixed spices, and beautifully presented with edible flowers. The tender chicken had a charred and crispy skin, the bulgur wheat is flavoursome and the pomegranate adds sweetness to the dish. Another incredible dish, I certainly felt spoilt. My dessert choice was never going to be anything other than the Baklava, a personal favourite. It was of course nutty if not a little on the dry side for my usual liking, but aside from this, I was overjoyed with how great the food tasted and how welcoming the staff were. When next in Central London, visit Imad’s Syrian kitchen, you won’t be disappointed! it’s now one of my favorite restaurants in Kingly Court and no doubt I will be back. • Bombay Delight – Review

From the moment we walked into Bombay Delight in Wimbledon we were greeted with a smile, and the great service continued throughout the meal. The staff were diligent and knowledgeable, and happy to help us navigate this impressive and modern take on traditional Indian dishes. The care that had gone into the mouth-watering menu had clearly also gone into the décor of the restaurant, with all the interiors from the marble tables and textured wall coverings to the framed newspaper prints (sourced from Mumbai), there was clearly a high level of care and pride that ran through the business. We had a French Martini and a On Bombay Beach cocktail whilst perusing the well thought through menu, and were struck by the number of dishes that would suit a vegetarian and vegan diet. The restaurant’s philosophy of using fresh and natural ingredients could be seen in the selection of food available. We nibbled through our popadums, for which we’d never seen such an array – with different textures and flavours it was a fun departure from the norm, and with a Vegan beetroot, plus mint and a homemade Bombay chutney as dips, we had never had so many flavour combinations! For starters we had the Avocado Chat (v) and Tandoori Jhinga (Prawns), which were both delightful. The prawns were juicy, and despite being done tandoori style, they were not overcooked or tough. My only complaint was that there wasn’t more! Although I wasn’t sure what to expect from the avocado, I was very happy with the stack of avocado, potato and spices presented on a quirky wagon. With pops of pomegranate, the cold complimented the warm smoky prawns well. All washed down with a glass of the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, which was fresh and easy drinking. For mains we went for a mix of vegetarian and fish once again. With the Aubergine Baigan (cooked with onion, tomato and tempered with ginger) complimenting the Chefs Signature Samundri Khazana which was a dinner to end all dinners; salmon, monkfish, tigers prawns mousse stuffed into a calamari, with garlic, tomato and coconut sauce with a hint of raw mango. We chose pilau rice and the chili and cheese naan, which didn’t disappoint in the heat stakes (so those who prefer a medium heat be wary!). Both mains were succulent and well cooked, we didn’t miss meat at all, with the chunky aubergine in place. And the chefs special would be the perfect Sunday meal replacement. We got the impression no expense is spared in these plentiful and fresh dishes. Dessert was equally as tasty, for those with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Brownie was a fudgy, chocolate sensation. And the Gulab Jamun provided a spongey donut style ball, both with ice cream. All in all, I have to say we were really stuck for choice on this impressive menu, we couldn’t decide what to eat. And the staff and ingredients were fit for this great menu. We will definitely be back to sample more from what we both described as the most of the most delicious Indian restaurants we’ve ever been to! • Roti King – Review

Pick a type of cuisine from any country, and chances are there will be a restaurant somewhere in London that caters for it.  The gang here at The Capturist are more than partial to a good roti, especially the flaky buttery Malaysian Roti Canai variety but it’s not always easy to find.  Having often seen the queues outside Euston’s Roti King whilst passing at lunchtime it was time to see if the food matched the seemingly high demand. Roti King is a pretty tiny place, so on entering, we start to wonder if the queues are actually just because they can’t fit inside and with the basic decor we ask ourselves if we will be leaving hungry and disappointed. But hold on, people don’t just queue up, even for the tiniest place if they aren’t expecting something pretty special inside. We hold our ground and we are glad we did. There’s a real skill involved in making roti and every chef has their own technique, which includes any combination of folding, pressing, spinning, stretching and resting for just the right amount of time. Once the dough is prepared, it has to be cooked just right, and these chefs certainly hold the magic in their hands! I ordered the roti canai and curry chicken along with the beef rendang. The portions on both these dishes are on the small side, so if you are very hungry or you generally have a big appetite, you may want to choose two dishes (which is what I did . The roti was everything I could have imagined, soft, buttery, flakey and full of ghee! Tearing the roti, using it to scoop up every last drop of my chicken and to mop up my curry was a delight and left me craving for more. The Roti Canai options also include mutton, fish and dahl. If you get one of the front tables you can see the mesmerising dance of chefs stretching and spinning dough behind a glass pane. Of course it’s not all about the roti, The beef rendang was rich, flavoursome and delicious. By glancing around the restaurant however, you get the impression that most people come here for the roti canai and there is only one way to eat it, roll up your sleeves and prepare to get messy! • Hawksmoor Wood Wharf – Review

Earlier this year, the acclaimed and much loved steak restaurant Hawksmoor, unveiled its impressive new venue. On the water of Canary Wharf’s Wood Wharf, the impressive eco-friendly pavilion is a sight to see, it’s twinkling lights reflecting in the water. The new venue includes terraces with waterside views from both the restaurant and the 120 seat downstairs bar, the Lowback. The restaurant interior has all the mid-century sophistication we’ve come to expect from Hawksmoor, with plush green leather seating, wooden panelling, low hanging textured glass lighting and accents of antique brass. The inviting bar tempts the early birds to hop onto one of its green leather stools and order an expertly crafted cocktail from their extensive drinks menu. Upstairs, groups of up to 20 can enjoy a private dining area named after local legend, singer, and self-confessed bawdy landlady Queenie Watts. First and foremost, Hawksmoor is a steakhouse, and it’s no longer a secret that they serve up some of the best steaks around in the most sustainable way. The menu includes their favourite cuts of ribeye, sirloin, fillet and rump, alongside a variety of other land and sea-inspired mains. The bone marrow and onions starter with sourdough toast was a delightful start to the meal. The rich and buttery spread, served in its very own bone topped with sweet onion, was spread across delicious sourdough. The beautifully marbled meat of ribeye is always a draw for me and true to form, Hawksmoor delivered. The slightly blackened, salty crust easily gave way to its tender and deep pink middle, full of the flavours that ribeye provides. A rich and glossy bone marrow gravy is perfect to drizzle over the tasty steak, triple cooked chips and buttered greens. Sat on a plush green leather sofa, it was only fitting to choose The Ambassador, Femmes de Virunga 70% chocolate, caramel and hazelnuts. Presented like a beautiful piece of art, this chocolatey piece of heaven is sweet, decadent and moreish in a way that only guests at the ambassador’s party would understand, a perfect finish to an incredible meal. The service was top notch, the staff were knowledgable, friendly and attentive, the team here have mastered the perfect dining experience for guests, and I’ll certainly be back! Hawksmoor also offers up an Express menu with two-courses for £24 and three courses for £28 and if you fancy heading over there on a Sunday, don’t miss out on their Sunday roast offering, you won’t be disappointed.
