The Working Mum’s Club in Deptford has completely changed the game when it comes to supporting mothers who are juggling work, childcare, and everything else life throws their way. This isn’t just another nursery or another co-working space, it’s a genuinely thoughtful solution to a problem so many mums face every single day.
I was lucky to be invited to The Working Mum’s Club (TWMC) to try it out for the day. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the branding: fun, bold, unapologetic, and refreshingly honest. Nothing watered down… One poster in the co-working space proudly declares, “This is the place to get sh!t done”. A sentence that perfectly captures the energy of the room. It resonates deeply with every mum sat there, furiously typing, fully focused, making every single minute count while their child plays in the nursery next door. Because let’s be real, childcare is expensive, and for so many parents, the cost alone becomes the reason they can’t return to work or grow their business.
As a freelancer, I know this struggle all too well. I dedicate three days a week to running my business, when I’m not on a photoshoot, I’m at home or in a cafe working on my laptop. I’ve looked into co-working spaces before, but once you add childcare into the mix, the cost can quickly become unrealistic. Paying for both simply isn’t sustainable for many families. Enter The Working Mum’s Club, a place where you can work productively with other mums sat nearby and know your child is thriving just steps away.

On arrival, I was greeted in the café by founder Jennifer Sutcliffe, whose vibrant personality and passion were immediately evident as she spoke about the early days of The Working Mum’s Club and how far it has come. Her enthusiasm for what she has built truly shines through. My son and I were guided over to the nursery, conveniently located right next to the café and co-working space. We were introduced to the nursery manager and one of the teachers, where we received such warm welcomes. Saying goodbye to your child is never easy, but I felt genuinely at ease knowing he was in such capable and caring hands. The montessori-inspired nursery is beautifully designed with children firmly at its heart, engaging, stimulating, and thoughtfully built around learning through play.

Next I was shown to the co-working space, equipped with everything you need to actually get work done. Fast Wi-Fi, a kitchen to make tea and coffee, private phone booths for calls, and desks complete with monitors for those who prefer a bigger screen than a laptop. The fun and bold branding flows from the cafe into the co-working space beautifully and you can’t help but marvel at the fun artwork. Once I settled in, I put my head down and got stuck into work, and I honestly felt more productive than I had in weeks. No distractions no guilt, just focused, uninterrupted time to work.

Lunch was another highlight: a delicious grain bowl packed with vegetables, seeds and slow cooked beef, enjoyed in the café just outside the co-working space. A welcome upgrade from eating at my desk or grabbing something rushed between tasks. Once in the cafe you get to see the wonderful community come in with their kids, they can order a coffee and drink it peacefully while their child plays in the dedicated play area. That’s right no need to struggle keeping them in a high chair, as they shout noooo! They can sit and play with the ample toys on offer. It's a great space for parents to meet and connect, you can even sign up to events and classes that take place in the cafe, one of the classes being Spanish classes for kids (and adults).
The heart of The Working Mum’s Club is clearly its Founder, Jennifer. You can see she has her finger in all the pies, ensuring everything runs smoothly, talking to the mums, playing with the kids in the cafe, cooking up delicious meals…
The Working Mum’s Club is a space for any mum navigating the delicate balance of work, childcare, and, in many cases, personal passion. It’s more than just a place to get things done, it’s a supportive community where mums can connect, share experiences, and feel understood. Before the end of my visit, I’d already booked a one-off day during the February half term, a flexible option TWMC offers to support mums during half term. It takes an hour and a half to get there from where I live, which is why enrolling full time won’t work for me, but I will defiantly take the long commute for the odd day when it’s needed. My request to Jennifer before leaving was "Please come to East London, TWMC is needed"!.
