  • Rotorious in Peckham – Review

Peckham has long been a mecca for foodies whether you are seeking quick casual bites or fine dining. Step out of the station onto colourful Rye Lane and any way you turn you are guaranteed a memorable experience in one of its many bars and eateries. Enter Market Stalls, head past the independent boutiques and out the back is Rotorious, our new obsession. Set up by brothers Adam and Sam Reid, the concept was born out of their ten-year passion for French style rotisserie and creating the perfect slow spit-roasted chicken fused with flavours of the Caribbean. We were made to feel so welcome by them we felt like we were eating in their own backyard. We went for a full rotisserie chicken with all the trimmings – rice, fries, mango and avocado salad, the famous gravy and the pineapple and scotch bonnet chilli sauce. We also tried the Chicken Poke bowl which was exceptional with pulled chicken, black rice, beans and edamame and topped with delicious crispy onions. The food arrived quickly and looked like a feast  – there really was plenty for two of us to tuck into. The Norfolk Whites chicken is supplied locally and you can tell, the meat fell off the bone and we made very quick work of it. The pimento and tropical spice rub is tasty and moreish, I found myself devouring the chicken skin as well as the meat. All the sides were fresh and delicious – the coleslaw was a particular favourite. How do we describe the gravy? Made from the juices of the basted chicken as it rotates, it’s a really unique flavour and a secret recipe. We highly recommend you try the hot sauce as it’s not a blow your head off experience, but instead a slow fruity burn. Adam explained they are working on a version to bottle and sell and I suspect like Peckham’s finest Rodney and DelBoy this time next year they might become millionaires from it. They plan to hand over the rotisserie to guest chefs over the coming months which is a very smart move indeed, I’m already planning my next visit to see who’s up. • Nandine – A Kurdish feasting from Pary Baban – Review

As temperatures drop our first instinct is to turn to warmer blankets, candles and comforting foods like soups, stews and hearty bakes. So as we stepped inside the candlelight warmth of Nandine on a chilly autumn evening we knew we were in for a treat. Fresh flowers decorated the long dining table with handwritten rustic place names and a special 10-course menu “Ahang” designed for one night only. We started with brightly-coloured crunchy and tangy traditional Kurdistan pickles, designed I’m sure as a palate cleanser for the feast ahead. This was followed by a Palpina soup with fried onions then Dandok, an amazing dish with a garlic roasted tomato on a bed of strained yoghurt and cracked wheat with zatar. It tasted like a creamy hug in a bowl and the entire table was ooing and aahing at how delicious it was. You may have tried Dolma before, popular in Greece but Pary’s were longer, served warm and with some succulent green beans. Most dishes are small plate style, designed to be shared and enjoyed in a group, with vegetarian and vegan options available. Our main courses threw up some memorable flavours and I’d be hard pressed to decide between Qibuli Rash  slow cooked mutton chunks served over smoked rice or the Bal chicken wings with tangy tamarind and pomegranate seeds. The stunning presentation of the Lula Kebab with a tasty flatbread, spicy chilli dip, yoghurts and grilled veg had us all reaching for a portion to try despite feeling rather full.  Even the desserts were beautifully presented and a fitting end to the feast. We were delighted when Pary came out of the kitchen with her family to tell us her story from refugee to chef to restaurant owner, and her next move finding a publisher for her fantastic recipes, kept since she was 18 and all handwritten. I suggest you book a visit as soon as you can. Address: 45 Camberwell Church Street, Southwark, London, SE5 8TR Written by Claire Selby Photography courtesy of Nadine #kurdish #kurdishfood #nadine

  • Lilly’s Cafe, Covent Garden – Review

Lilly’s Cafe in Covent Garden is every Gen Z and millennial’s dream place! A beautiful courtyard filled with green leafy plants leads you into the ultimate instagramable restaurant, plush blue velvet chairs, pumpkin orange walls, hanging plants from the ceiling, with an eye-catching skylight. This place is stylish and chic! They specialise in delicious and equally beautifully presented brunch dishes that include Banoffee Toast, Capo E Pepe, Rice Pudding and Bacon Brioche to name a few. Lilly’s Cafe offers all day dining, arriving at 6.30pm I opted for the larger plates instead of the breakfast options (although they are on offer if you so desire in the evening). I choose the Roasted Cauliflower Flatbread, which was a medley of chickpeas, cauliflower, and pomegranate. The curry mayo and red onion chutney brought the dish to life, flavoursome, with a kick of heat, with the pomegranate adding a touch of sweetness. I also tried The Tokyo Fries, another dish that was a hit, crunchy fries, with a generous sprinkling of chopped spring onions and aioli and a welcome kick of heat, it was moorish and was very quickly devoured. Although absolutely full, I managed to save a little space for dessert. Headed up by chef Kimberly Lin, the founder of vegan stuffed cookie brand Floozie Cookies, I had high hopes for the dessert. I ordered the lemon drizzle cake and although it tasted nice I wasn’t blown away. However overall I loved my main dishes and the surroundings are beautiful, it’s an oasis away from the hustle of Covent Garden and I’d deffo visit during breakfast or brunch to try out their Banoffee Toast and Bacon Brioche! Lilly’s Cafe also offers afternoon tea, served daily from 4pm, where you can get bottomless cake with tea / coffee for £20pp or £30pp if you want to upgrade to the champagne offering. • Cottons – Hoxton Square Review

It’s a dark rainy October evening in Shoreditch, squinting through the downpour you observe the blurry glow of the various bars and restaurants that line the edges of Hoxton Square. One glow in particular promises a respite from the UK drizzle, with its grass umbrellas and seemingly colourful interior. We head for shelter in Cottons for a slice of island life and some warm sunshine food. Cottons isn’t the new kid on the block when it comes to Caribbean cuisine, with a history of serving Londoners dating back to 1985. The Hoxton Square branch is the latest edition, having been relocated from just around the corner on Curtain Road. The Hoxton branch is their largest establishment to date, with 60 covers in the restaurant, a downstairs bar serving 300 types of rum (yes please), and an adjoining takeaway accessible from Old Street. The restaurant’s interior has touches of the tropical vibe you would expect, but with a more polished finish than some of the brands other establishments. The menu is a celebration of the Caribbean’s flavoursome and culturally diverse food, with dishes such as salt fish fritters, jerk wings, curried goat, channa dhal and creole grilled Mahi Mahi. As fans of the Indian inspired flavours of Trinidad, we couldn’t resist ordering the doubles. For those familiar with the much loved street food, Cotton’s version may not end up dripping through your fingers as expected, but the curried channa is nicely spiced and tasty. The salt fish fritters are pleasant enough, the sweet mango chutney dip and Bajan pepper compote is the perfect fit for this dish. Trying to steer away from my usual choice of anything jerk related, I ordered the mixed fish platter, a magnificently satisfying plate of seabass, tilapia, red bream grilled king prawns, crispy squid, plantain, and (ok I cheated) a deeply flavoured jerk sauce. Served with the classic rice and peas, you can’t go too wrong for the ultimate comfort food. A surprising star dish was the dessert, a gooey, melty warm chocolate fondant, with a generous dollop of rum and raisin ice cream and dulche de leche, it was just heavenly. For a slice of the island life on a grey evening, food which feels like a warm hug, or just for an education in rum, head to Cottons Hoxton. • Where the Pancakes are – Review

The latest location for one of London’s best-kept secrets has now opened in Battersea Power Stations refurb. Nuzzled across from the main entrance, you see the blazing ‘Where The Pancakes Are’ neon sign, showcasing a sleek, dutch-inspired pancake house that does more than you’d expect. These people pray to the maple syrup, but they know delicious comes in all shapes, colours and sizes. The menu reflects this. Expect to salivate over Korean miso slaws, homemade pickles, and almond-apricot granola. The 12-ingredient strong batter includes buttermilk and can be slow to cook, although we didn’t wait long, and the place was heaving. The menu is actually chock full of new ideas and old favourites. We tried the pulled pork pancakes (superb) and the ‘Australian’; one polenta corn fritter, smashed avocado, oat creme fraiche, rocket salad, Belazu’s preserved lemon and olive oil. We also scarfed down the banana marshmallow pancake option, which included hazelnut-cocoa-nib praline and deliciously unusual basil marshmallows. Fret not; if you’d have enough pancakes (we don’t know if that’s possible), there are other dessert options too. One thing we hadn’t had before was a ‘Dutch baby’. The owner tells us that these were used by her friends to lure lovers into staying longer after a night of passion. Don’t worry; we asked for the recipe for you… The drinks have been equally thought out, from great cocktail pairings to a wide variety of non-alcoholic options. The homemade iced tea was one of the best we’d had. As the menu says, ‘Batter Matters’. We couldn’t agree more. Make a reservation today; you don’t need to be hungover for these pancakes. Can’t make it to one of the three locations? Fear not. More are on the way. The team also prepares home boxes that you can buy online for delivery. So you can make your own! • Chourangi – Review

Introducing the leading Indian restaurant Chourangi. The restaurant first opened its doors in October 2021, and has been on a mission to take Londoners on a culinary journey into India’s explored cuisines from the heritage city of Calcutta. This is the first venture into London by India’s largest group of restaurant chains that now operate an impressive 130 restaurants across five countries! The site on Quebec Street, right by Marble Arch marks the group’s first excursion into the UK, following the much-loved, similar concept, Oh! Calcutta in India. Chourangi takes its name from Chowringhee, the oldest and most vibrant quarter of Calcutta, the restaurant brings alive a unique culinary tradition that has been born of centuries of overseas traders leaving their mark on this vibrant culture. As you walk in, the atoms hit you instantly, as does the warmth of the hosts and team. The atmosphere is electric for all the right reasons and the place is bustling. It wasn’t what I expected for Wednesday evening however this was a sign for what was to come during the meal. If you’re an adventurous foodie, this is the perfect place to dine with an extensive menu. The team also know the menu very well and recommended some of the classic dishes as well as some of their favourites. We went for the Lotus Stem Sweet Potato Chat, Nizam’s Malai Tikka, Grand Trunk Black Dahl and the Kosha Lamb. What a treat on the senses, from the depth of flavour, to the presentation and even the textural aspect. This was a cuisine I’d not experienced previously due to the lack of northeastern cuisine in London restaurants, but it’s a unique and impressive blend of British, Dutch, Armenian, French, Portuguese and Chinese flavours that have descended over a 300-year history. The innovative dishes and recipes have been carefully curated by Chef turned restaurateur Anjan Chatterjee, partnering with his dear friend Aditya Ghosh (Lawyer turned airline entrepreneur). Anjan and Aditya came up with the concept over a meal in one of Anjan’s restaurants a few years ago and it was Anjan’s dream to put forth the heritage cuisine of Calcutta on the global food and what a better way to do it than to showcase it in London – the food capital of the world. I’d go back to Chourangi and have recommended it several times already to friends and colleagues.
