- Sophisticated Sardinian dining at Sette: Review
Nestled inside the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge is Sette – a gem of a restaurant offering an exclusive Italian dining experience in a stunning setting. From the moment we walked in, we had such a great experience, from the understated wood-panelled dining room, the jazz quartet and the attentive service throughout. But on to the food – the bread basket was so exceptional we ordered it twice: lovely fresh flavours and textures from a sundried tomato roulade bread to a cheese twist and a light mini baguette all accompanied with fresh oils, soft cheeses and roasted peppers. Our first course was a beautifully colourful and flavoursome artichoke and tomato Bottarga salad which encapsulated a lazy Italian hot summer afternoon. We excitedly indulged in the Culurgiones which followed – like an Italian version of gyoza and so freshly filled with potato, mint and pecorino on a bed of fresh tomato ragu. The main event was a very generous Lobster Salad Catalana, with a delicious tangy bisque sauce, and mouthwateringly fresh lobster. My dining partner took on the wine pairings, which complemented each dish perfectly – I tried one of the mocktails which was served so beautifully and really delicious. The dessert was an unusual puffed pastry with ricotta and saffron sponge and honey vanilla gelato. Luckily it wasn’t too big! We left feeling as if we’d indeed had a quick trip to Sardinia and wondering why more restaurants aren’t focusing in on this really delightful cuisine. Bellissimo Sette! - Pivot, Covent Garden – Review
Pivot is an intimate restaurant overlooking Covent Garden. The burnt orange walls and leather seats frame the small room that seats its customers in a small but well-formed space, with an attached area giving room to sit adjacent to the open kitchen. What seems to be a converted townhouse, the space sits a storey up, with the restrooms at the top of the winding stairs. The menu is limited but well formed, although having sampled the Dressed Summer Courgette starter, it would be nice to see more veggie options that offered a more generous portion. The Cured Meat Platter delivered a good portion of meat, with a deliciously tasty chutney and an array of pickled condiments. We started with a bottle of the Vinho Verde, my summer favourite, a crisp white with a light fizz, it’s a lovely summer tipple. The starters were followed by two outstanding mains: Free Range English Chicken and Pan Roast Seabass both of which were generous in portion and flavour. The Chicken was succulent and tasty served with perfectly cooked asparagus and a very moreish mushroom and tarragon cream sauce. The Seabass had a crisp skin and was flakey and soft. We were especially impressed by the Charred Hispi Cabbage, with bread crumbs and chilli butter it had that Sunday roast vegetable feel, tasting like brussel sprouts, we couldn’t leave a single bite! The other sides of Buttery Mash and Dauphinoise Potatoes were equally as moreish, and brought out the flavours of the chicken and seabass. With little room left, we ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding to share. Warm and soft, with a jug of extra sticky sauce to boot! The custard was missing, but the vanilla ice-cream complimented the pudding well, and we washed it down with a Negroni, which certainly packed a punch! Overall, we were very impressed by the flavours of the food and the quality of the produce, I just wished there was a few more veg options on the snacks. But overall, we’d definitely go back, and I’d love to try the Sunday Lunch! - Rarebit – Review
Rarebit is an all-day neighbourhood kitchen in the heart of Elephant & Castles’s new bustling food area Elephant park. It’s the perfect spot for brunch or an evening dinner with friends, family or colleagues. They are also dog friendly which is a huge plus. Offering 55 covers inside and 16 on the terrace, RAREBIT is a celebration of modern British food that focuses on local ingredients serving coffee from Climpson & Sons, bread and pastries from Flor, fresh produce from Natoora, cheeses from Neal’s Yard Dairy and charcuterie from London Smoke & Cure. The menu features rare breed meats and sustainable fish as well as plentiful veggie and vegan options. So, let’s talk about the food. I headed in on a Sunday for the daytime brunch menu and ordered a tantalising selection of food including a well-spiced Shakshouka, a must-have slice of rarebit on toast and the English breakfast… because you can never have enough food. The Shakshouka was delicious, full of flavour and richness, and the rarebit itself was exactly what I was after. Being Welsh, I hold this staple to a high regard and it hit the spot. The English Breakfast was pretty good, the sausages were my favourite part, however, the portion could have been slightly more generous and you’d want to order something extra to go with it to be full. The coffee was excellent though, which I’d expect from Climpson & Sons who’ve got 20 years of glorious coffee firmly under their belts. The lunch menu was changing and sadly the roasts weren’t an option at the time, but I did speak to the manager and am pleased to here that these will be coming back because they were apparently a sellout. The dinner menu (6pm-9.30 pm) looks far more expansive with offerings including scallop and ‘nduja mac and cheese with crab bisque, hearty Pork belly, crackling, caramelised apple, cauliflower purée and red wine jus. I’ll absolutely be coming by to see how the vibe of RAREBIT changes from day to night as the day vibe was very trendy, laid back and family-friendly, but if you’re a local this is the perfect morning hotspot for breakfast, brunch and amazing coffee! Feel like splashing out? For the ultimate weekend treat, the restaurant provides a generously priced combo of a glass of Deveaux Grande Réserve Champagne, half a slice of house rarebit, and your choice of any brunch dish for just £25.
