  • M Threadneedle Street Tokyo Brunch – Review

M Threadneedle Street brings a brand new bottomless offering to London with the launch of Tokyo Brunch. Brunchers can enjoy three Japanese-inspired courses whilst sipping on 90 minutes of free-flowing cocktails or prosecco for just £70 per person. We arrived at 2:30pm on the launch day of Tokyo Brunch, and there was a lovely buzz. Nearly all the cherry blossom tree-decorated tables were filled with brunchers, and there was a DJ playing music. The menu is a ‘set menu’ (with options) – a round of starters is enjoyed for the table so everyone shares Fried Chicken and Crispy Squid followed by your personal choice of Dim Sum (Wagyu & Pork, Pork & Kimchi, or Mushroom & Leeks V Ve), choice of Bao Buns (Wagyu Beef or Tofu V), AND Yakitori (Pork Belly or Celeriac V). The chicken was juicy and the squid was crispy, and the portions were particularly generous. We ordered the Mushroom Dim Sum, which was spicy and meaty, and the Wagyu & Pork which were a 10/10 – we both agreed that these were the best dumplings we’d had in a while. They were served in little steamers lined with bamboo leaves, nothing was missed when it came to the presentation of the dishes. Next up was the fantastic Bao Buns – we ordered the Wagyu Beef and Tofu buns. These were the best dishes we had at the brunch! Soft buns and moist fillings with punchy sauces. We both ordered ramen for the mains – mushroom and chicken. Again, very generous portions, and beautifully presented. Both came with a runny egg on top and lots of fresh vegetables on top of the slow-cooked broth and fresh noodles. We barely had room for dessert by the end, but we ordered one of each and shared the Matcha Tirimisu and the White Chocolate Parfait. The Matcha Tirimisu didn’t quite work, but the White Chocolate Parfait was excellent. The cocktails were the real standout here, we tried a few of them, and they all came in beautiful glasses with pretty garnishes. We’d recommend the Japanese Slipper to start, and then we kept ordering the Japanese Garden which was our favourites. Considering the amount of food and cocktails we had, this is a steal for £70 (it genuinely doesn’t stop coming!)! The staff here were attentive from the moment we walked in, and the hostess and our waiter made us feel at home. One thing to note is that it isn’t the most vegan or vegetarian menu friendly, but the staff are so friendly and accommodating they help in organising vegan and veggie dishes. • Prompt good conversations with The Yards x The School of Life

The Capturist were excited to be invited to the new food collaboration between The Yards, Miscusi and the School of Life. The concept is simple: choose a conversation menu according to your dining partner: date, family or friend and pre-order your food from the Italian-inspired menu to ensure you focus on your dining companion for the evening. Dishes include bruschetta, pasta and classic Italian desserts Tiramisu and Profiteroles. The School of Life have designed brilliant conversation starters to accompany each course, prompting questions to make you think and delve deeper than “How’s work” or “Where are you going on holiday this year?”. Usually, when we dine out, the room goes quiet once the food arrives but when dining at Miscusi, each table was alive with conversations and laughter as everyone worked through the questions. Choosing the friends menu, we contemplated questions about ourselves and our friendship whilst sharing the trio of bruschetta and chatting to the neighbouring table. We enjoyed the main courses of spaghetti carbonara and mushroom and pistachio casarecci while delving deeper into our emotional life skills and how we’d like to improve ourselves. Our desserts were Tiramisu and a Chocolate Profiterole which disappeared very quickly as we discussed loneliness and appreciation! All in all it was a thought-provoking evening and the concept is definitely a clever one. • Middle Eight – Afternoon Tea Review

Whilst having a lovely day browsing the shops of Covent Garden and briefly stopping to watch some of the very talented street performers on show, we headed off to our much anticipated musically inspired Afternoon Tea at  Middle Eight. The 5-star hotel is built upon the foundations of the iconic music, Kingsway Hall and only just a 5-minute walk from Covent Garden on Queens Street. From the very minute we stepped through the lobby doors we were met with friendlly and attentive staff, which carried right through to our lunch. We were led to a table by the window where the manager gave us an overview of what is named the Covent Garden Crescendo, A symphony of sweets and sandwiches which are handcrafted by Clanny Rodrigues, their Head Pastry Chef. We decided to indulge ourselves by choosing the option with bubbles, which was the perfect accompaniment for perusing the menu. There was a good variety of exotic teas to choose from, for me it had to be the fragrant tasting Jasmine Silver needle tea, and my guest the Lapsang suchong which was more full-bodied and smoky and paired lovely with the savoury snacks. After advising our waiter of no allergies, the afternoon tea stand was brought out with each dish explained in great detail. The dainty sandwiches consisted of delicately tasting Coronation chicken, Grilled vegetables, Smoke salmon with cream cheese and some Middle Eight sausage rolls. Scones with clotted cream and jam came next  A great base before tucking into the selection of pastries and patisseries finished off with musical motifs made of icing. My favourite was the decadent hazelnut harmony; a chocolate topped éclair filled with hazelnut cream which was followed closely by the Blood Orange Opera, a citrus pannacotta with layers of jelly in a citrus sauce,  a great fresh finish in your mouth. Overall a lovely experience with great flavours and excellent customer service, a place I will definitely revisit, although as I’m writing this my guest has beaten me to it and has already booked her next visit. Address: 77 Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, WC2B 5BX Afternoon tea: £45pp/55pp with a glass of Prosecco Website: www.middleeight.com Written by Lorna Bryn Photography courtesy of Middle Eight #afternoontea #coventgarden #middleeight

  • Obicà – Review

Mozzarella aficionados Obicà have re-opened the doors of their refurbed Soho location to celebrate 10 years with a brand-new contemporary look. Industrial design breeze block walls and a concrete roof are softened with round mirrors, plants, and naked light fixtures. The interiors create an informal atmosphere with a cosmopolitan feel, typical of Italian piazzas and arcades. You’d think the space would lack warmth as you walk in, but the staff and buzz of the close-together tables create an atmosphere. Campari, Aperol and Olive Oil bottles are dotted along the bar back with jars of olives, and there’s an open deli kitchen at the front as you walk in, where you can see the chefs making salads and slicing cured meats. The menu is made up of a ‘Mozzarella Bar’ from which diners can choose either the classic or smoked mozzarellas, as well as in bocconcini “bites” format, all produced exclusively with buffalo milk following the regulations of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP. Small plates include Prosciutto Crudo di Parma DOP aged 24 months and Bresaola di Chianina IGP, which can be ordered alongside the Mozzarella Bar’s Lievitati “Leavened” items such as focaccina and bruschette. There is also a variety of pizza, pasta, salads, meats, and fish available on the menu and a delicious desserts list featuring tiramisù, ricotta di bufala cake with marron glace caramel, and torta di capri with ice cream. There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options, for an Italian restaurant, they do this well. Some favourites that we ordered were the Classic Burrata (I asked the waitress what her favourite was), the Red Pepper Hummus, which came with flatbreads, and the Pomodorini del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP and Fresh Oregano Bruschette really sung with some balsamic drizzled over it. The burrata was the best we’d had in a while, firm on the outside and gooey and creamy on the inside. The Red Pepper Hummus was something I hadn’t tried before but I was pleasantly surprised, it was slightly sweet and had a beautiful orange colour from the red pepper – this was served with ample soft, warm flatbreads. The Bruschette had a few options you could choose from – it arrived at the table as two pieces. You could choose whether it was two of the same Bruschette or a mix and match. We went for the mix and match and ordered Cremoso di Bufala, Fried Artichoke, Black Summer Truffle and the Pomodorini del Piennolo del Vesuvio DOP and Fresh Oregano. The bread was fresh and the toppings were generous, I would recommend ordering a mix and match of these! Obica is an ideal spot to meet in central whether you’re a two or a larger group, and it’s perfect for just having a glass of wine with some small plates or a larger meal, which takes you into the evening – there’s something for everyone! • Indian buffet at Babur in Honor Oak – Review

If you find yourself wandering around Honor Oak on a Sunday afternoon, do not be startled if you spot a large tiger, perched above above a door front ready to pounce. You have in fact stumbled across a firm favourite establishment in the area. Babur has been serving up delicious modern Indian dishes since the 80s from its upmarket South London restaurant. On Sundays, they offer an all-day buffet dining experience, and for those who like to mix it up a bit, each week’s menu brings something different. Not one to shy away from an all you can eat buffet, we braved the Tiger one Sunday to sample some of Babur’s dishes. For those who have booked a buffet experience, expect to be seated in a beautiful Rajasthani marquee tent beyond the brasserie-style restaurant. As we sat there soaking up the atmosphere, the marquee slowly fills up, a great sign no doubt. We begin with some seemingly familiar poppadoms and a selection of dips ranging from familiar mango to more spicy garlic, ginger and chilli options, all felt fresh and a great way to whet our appetite. The buffet on this occasion offered up a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, and it’s tempting to load your plate with everything. Remember folks, this is all you can eat with no limit on how many times you go back so go easy and enjoy the flavours a few dishes at a time. Some of the standout dishes from the menu included a silky thick black daal. We mopped up the creamy lentils with a soft naan. The Traditional Mughlai chicken was tender and lightly curried, not feeling too heavy on the stomach at all. Another standout was the Salt fish cooked in coastal spiced coconut sauce, really light, beautifully flavoured and surprisingly different from what you’d expect from an Indian buffet. Despite calling out a few of our highlights, we actually have very little bad to say about all the dishes, others included Mixed vegetable fritters, Lamb cooked with corn and coriander, vegetables tossed with cumin & garlic, Basmati rice flavoured with saffron and much more. The buffet gives you a real opportunity to taste as many different Indian dishes as your belly can handle so go hungry. If you are looking for more of the contemporary and innovative dishes on offer, you need to opt for the la carte menu. No doubt we will be back to sample those so watch this space. The Sunday buffet is available from midday until 4pm and costs £21.95 for adults and £14.95 for children and children under 7 eat for free.
