Water Pantanal Fire - A free striking photography exhibition at the Science Museum
Launching on 6th February, Water Pantanal Fire is a striking free photography exhibition at the Science Museum, exploring the beauty, biodiversity, and growing vulnerability of the world’s largest tropical wetland. Showcasing over 60 powerful images by acclaimed Brazilian documentary photographers Lalo de Almeida and Luciano Candisani, the exhibition offers a rare visual journey through the Pantanal; a UNESCO recognised Natural World Heritage Site often described as a paradise on Earth.
Captured between 2007 and 2024, the photographs reveal a dramatic contrast between a water rich landscape teeming with life and the devastation left behind by droughts and wildfires. Curated by Eder Chiodetto and produced by the Brazilian initiative Documenta Pantanal, the exhibition places these images within the urgent global conversation around climate change and environmental protection.
Once relatively well preserved, the Pantanal now faces escalating threats from deforestation, intensive agriculture and a changing climate. Record-breaking fires in recent years, including a catastrophic blaze in 2020 that burned more than a quarter of the region, underscore the fragility of this vital ecosystem. Water Pantanal Fire invites visitors to witness both the wonder of the Pantanal and the consequences of inaction, and to reflect on what is at stake if this extraordinary landscape is lost.
