¡Frida Icónica! Brings Frida Kahlo’s Vibrant World to Carnaby Street This Summer
This summer, one of London’s most iconic destinations will be transformed into a colourful celebration of art, identity and creativity as ¡Frida Icónica! arrives on Carnaby Street from 25th June.
Created in collaboration with Tate Modern, the striking public art takeover coincides with the launch of Frida: The Making of an Icon, a major new exhibition dedicated to the life and legacy of Frida Kahlo. The installation will turn the heart of Soho into an open-air gallery, immersing visitors in the bold colours, symbolism and spirit that have made Kahlo one of the most celebrated artists in history.
At the centre of the installation is a spectacular anamorphic mural by artist Alejandra Ballesteros. Composed of four individual portraits featuring Frida and contemporary artists influenced by her work, the mural forms Kahlo’s instantly recognisable profile when viewed from the perfect angle. Surrounding it, vibrant strands of traditional Mexican Papel Picado will flutter above Carnaby Street, bringing colour and movement to one of London’s most famous cultural destinations.
The installation arrives at a particularly fitting moment. A queer, disabled woman of colour, Kahlo challenged conventions and became a global symbol of self-expression, resilience and individuality. Her enduring influence continues to resonate across generations, particularly during a summer when London will once again celebrate Pride.
Beyond the artwork itself, Soho will host a series of Frida-inspired experiences throughout the season, with restaurants, bars and local businesses embracing Mexican and Latin American flavours through special menus, limited-edition dishes and cultural activations. Meanwhile, Tate Modern’s Frida: The Making of an Icon exhibition will bring together more than 30 works by Kahlo alongside pieces from artists around the world inspired by her image, story and artistic vision.
For Londoners and visitors alike, ¡Frida Icónica! offers a rare opportunity to experience Kahlo’s extraordinary legacy beyond the gallery walls, transforming Carnaby Street into one of the city’s most captivating cultural destinations this summer.
