The Manor Amsterdam Review: A stay in one of Amsterdam's coolest neighbourhoods

Amsterdam is packed with incredible places to stay. From charming canal-side townhouses to stylish boutique hotels, you're certainly spoilt for choice. But every now and then, you come across a hotel that stands out for a completely different reason. Not because it's the most luxurious or over-the-top, but because it has a story to tell. The Manor Amsterdam is one of those places, a Leonardo Limited Edition and its ninth property in Amsterdam. The Manor Amsterdam is housed in a beautifully restored former hospital dating back to the late 19th century, the hotel effortlessly blends its rich history with modern design. Rather than hiding its past, The Manor embraces it, allowing original architectural features to shine alongside contemporary interiors. One of my favourite details was the original grand staircase near the lifts. It's impossible not to stop and admire it, imagining the countless people who would have walked those very steps more than a century ago. It's these thoughtful touches that give the hotel so much character, making it feel far more memorable than your average city stay.

Located in Amsterdam Oost, one of the city’s most vibrant districts, The Manor offers a peaceful base away from the crowds while still being just a short Uber or tram ride from Amsterdam's most iconic attractions. It really gives you the best of both worlds, you can enjoy a quieter, more local side of the city without feeling far from the action.

The hotel itself is hard to miss. Its striking red-brick façade will instantly catch your attention and the grand exterior hints at the building's fascinating history long before you step inside. As you enter the hotel the atmosphere shifts from historic grandeur to understated elegance. The interiors are chic and contemporary, with soft lighting and soaring ceilings.

My Room

Walking into my room, the first thing I noticed was how cosy it felt. Natural light poured through the large windows, while the neutral colour palette created a calm, relaxing atmosphere. The bed was incredibly comfortable, which is exactly what you crave for after hours of wandering Amsterdam's cobbled streets. The thoughtful lighting made the room feel more like a boutique apartment than a standard hotel. The bathroom continued the luxury feel, with a generous walk-in shower, gorgeous marble tiles, from floor to ceiling, fluffy towels and premium amenities.

The hotel also features a stylish, well-equipped gym for anyone looking to fit in a workout during their stay. If you'd rather experience Amsterdam from a different perspective, the hotel can also arrange private canal boat tours for an additional fee. I was lucky enough to enjoy a boat trip with friends during my stay, and it quickly became one of the highlights of my visit. Gliding through Amsterdam's iconic canals offered a completely different view of the city, with picturesque architecture, a refreshing breeze and the opportunity to soak up the energy and charm of the city was incredible. I'd definitely recommend it!

Food and Drinks

For breakfast, guests are treated to a buffet offering, which includes fresh pastries, artisan breads, seasonal fruit, cereals, yoghurt, cheeses, cold meats and hot breakfast favourites. However it was PepeNero an Italian restaurant and bar by Daniele Lauritano situated in the hotel that really steals the spotlight when it comes to food, an Amsterdam Italian favourite with one other restaurant in Amsterdam. Dishes include slow-braised veal cheek and aubergine parmigiana, risotto cacio e pepe and truffle tagliolini and decadent desserts like the tiramisù and affogato with chocolate crumble.

Discovering Amsterdam Oost

Lined up outside are sleek black bicycles that guests can borrow free of charge. After all, you're in Amsterdam, cycling is practically a rite of passage! And this added perk, certainly makes you feel special, no need to fuss about looking for a bike to rent, it’s located conveniently right outside the hotel and yours for the taking! If you're anything like me and the thought of navigating busy city streets feels a little daunting, I'd recommend heading to nearby Oosterpark instead. It's the perfect spot for a leisurely ride, surrounded by greenery, winding paths and a much more relaxed pace. The neighbourhood feels more residential and creative with independent cafés, artisan bakeries, a gorgeous and relaxing park and neighbourhood restaurants lining the streets.

You will also find the oldest city windmill in Amsterdam bout a 5 minute bike ride away, next to a couple of bars and restaurants, it's the perfect place to admire one of Amsterdam's historic landmarks before settling in with a well-earned drink and a bite to eat. There is also a zoo nearby, perfect for a family outing.

Final Thoughts

The hotel is gorgeous and where it’s located is perfect, staying in Amsterdam Oost, encouraged me to explore a part of Amsterdam I'd never ventured into before, and it completely changed the way I experienced the city. I found myself immersed in cool residential neighbourhood which was creative and relaxed, a setting I much preferred over the hustle of the centre of Amsterdam and my stylish and comfortable room provided the perfect place to unwind at the end of each day. Throughout the stay, the service felt genuinely warm rather than overly formal which I loved. The Manor has a distinct personality, one that's shaped by its fascinating history, thoughtful design and welcoming atmosphere. I can't wait to visit again!
