Review of Burger & Bordeaux at Humble Grape in Battersea

There are few combinations quite as satisfying as a really good burger and a glass of red wine, and Humble Grape has turned this simple pleasure into a tempting lunchtime offer. Burger & Bordeaux pairs a seriously juicy beef burger with a glass of Château Grangey ‘Le Cerisier’ 2020 Bordeaux for just £20. The offer is available at Humble Grape’s Battersea, Islington and Canary Wharf locations. We headed to Battersea to try it for ourselves.

Set on Battersea Rise, close to Clapham Junction and just around the corner from Northcote Road, the Battersea wine bar has exactly the sort of atmosphere you want as we head into autumn. Wine bottles fill the walls, rustic tables and chairs give it a charming wine-cellar feel, and the open kitchen adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

We arrived with our little dog in tow, always a bonus when somewhere genuinely welcomes four-legged companions and found the restaurant equally relaxed and family-friendly. The star, of course, is the burger. Mega-thick, juicy and properly satisfying, it arrives with chunky hand-cut chips and is exactly the sort of indulgent weekend lunch you hope for. Alongside, the rich Bordeaux is an excellent match, cutting through the burger beautifully and making the whole thing feel rather more sophisticated than your average burger-and-fries.

In addition to this burger feast, we added the house special of Crispy Cauliflower with lime aioli and chilli ketchup; the reputation is well-deserved, it’s delicious! At £20 for the pairing, it also represents excellent value, particularly for London. Wine is very much at the heart of Humble Grape, with a changing programme of offers, tastings and events across its venues, so it’s worth checking what else is happening when you book.

Humble Grape also has locations in Islington and Canary Wharf where the Burger & Bordeaux offer is available, making it an easy weekend option whether you’re north, south or east.

For us, though, Battersea is particularly charming: cosy, informal and just a little bit tucked away, with walls of wine, a good glass of red and a seriously substantial burger. Add the fact that you can bring the dog and the children, and Burger & Bordeaux makes a very appealing excuse for a leisurely weekend lunch.
