Review of Bamboo Mat in Canary Wharf
A short stroll from Canary Wharf station lies Bamboo Mat. A Japanese - Peruvian fusion restaurant which is bringing the Nikkei dining movement to the area. Following the success of their Stratford restaurant, the new location brings an expanded menu alongside it’s signature creations.
The restaurant itself is full of natural timber, textured concrete and warm ambient lighting, bringing a modern feel with nods to the Japanese and Peruvian roots.

We started our food journey with the famed Ceviche Deluxe made fresh at the sushi & raw bar. Followed by Salmon Sashimi, Spicy Tuna Maki & Gambas Frites with a side of edamame. The Tuna Maki was particularly impressive, with it’s generous cuts of tuna that were melt in the mouth. The spicy edamame sauce (which we took on the side) had a real smokey quality, which we wern't expecting but was very welcome. The Prawn Gambas took the win for us though, with the light batter, fresh citrus taste and delicious ponzu was just gorgeous.

he House Robata is all cooked over the charcoal, and we opted for the off-piste option of Ox Cheek with yuzu gravy served over mashed potato. The meat was flaky and delicious, with delicious robata flavourings, paired with the superior yuzu gravy. We complimented it with the Grilled Seabass, which came on a very green, but very tasty risotto like base. Both were good portion sizes, and paired with our shared staters, we had more than enough food!
If you want to experience the best of the kitchen, Bamboo Mat offers 3 key tasting menus, starting at £38pp for the vegetarian option, up to £71 for the Nikkei Voyage (the ultimate experience), and each is served with the option of a wine pairing. I had never experienced Peruvian food before, and were surprised and delighted with the favours and the way it blended seamlessly with the Japanese options, cleverly fused into an impressive menu.
