Review of Bar Kroketa at Broadgate Circle

It was a busy Wednesday evening in Liverpool Street, amidst another heat wave, Broadgate Circle was packed with after work crowds spilling out onto the terraces and filling the central terrace. We made our way out of the packed outside space into the vibey inside of Bar Kroketa; dim lighting and wooden tables and well thought out surroundings, it feels like The City’s classy answer to an authentic Spanish taverna.

We started with pan con tomate, a simple but effective opener and one of my must tries for any Spanish or tapas restaurant. The tomato was fresh and bright, with the crisp bread providing just enough texture and richness to get things going. The celeriac, Mahou reduction and apple croqueta was a particularly good plant option. Earthy celeriac worked really well with the malty depth of the Mahou reduction, while the apple brought a welcome sweetness and acidity.

We also sampled the Monte Enebro, spinach bonbons, honey and coffee chilli dip. Lots of little balls of creamy, salty cheesy, spinach bites, this was a great sharer. Coupled with a honey and coffee chilli dip, which sounds a bit unusual on paper, but the sweetness really gave a delicious layer to the flavours. We also had the patatas bravas, again another one of my go to dishes for a tapas place, which delivered the familiar combination of crisp potatoes and punchy sauce.

To drink, we paired the meal with orange wine and a house vermouth cocktail. Both suited the food well: the orange wine had enough texture and acidity to cut through the fried dishes, while the vermouth cocktail felt right at home in the Spanish-inspired setting and was a lovely prelude to the meal.

Bar Kroketa works particularly well for a relaxed evening when you want to share a few things and catch up with friends, rather than settle in for a traditional three course meal. The menu encourages sampling and mixing flavours, and the setting at Broadgate Circle adds plenty of atmosphere especially on a warm summer evening when the whole area feels alive.
