From school doodles to the art world: The Doodle Boy is back in London with a new exhibition in The Truman Brewery

Remember being told off for doodling in class? For Joe Whale, those drawings that once landed him in trouble at school became the start of an extraordinary artistic journey. At just nine years old, his doodles found a new home covering the walls of a restaurant in Shrewsbury, capturing imaginations around the world and giving rise to his now-famous nickname, The Doodle Boy.

Fast-forward seven years, and Joe is back in the UK with a whole new artistic vision. Now 16 and based in Adelaide, Australia, the young creative is set to unveil Ambassadors of Feeling, his first major London solo exhibition at The Truman Brewery from 23-25 October. Showcasing an exciting new chapter in his creative journey, the exhibition marks a bold evolution from the spontaneous doodles that first made him famous. Think large-scale acrylic paintings and striking sculptures, with more than 22 new works inviting visitors into Joe’s ever-expanding imagination.

While his early work was all about picking up a pen and seeing where his imagination took him, Joe’s approach has evolved. Today, he carefully develops his ideas, thinks about the messages he wants to share and builds entire visual worlds around them. The result? A more considered and expressive body of work that explores deeper themes while keeping the playful spirit, boundless imagination and sense of fun that made his art so special in the first place.

At the heart of the exhibition are ten original characters, known as Joe’s “Ambassadors”, each representing a different idea or emotion. From Direction, Care and Humanity to Rebellion, Positivity, Peace, Imagination, Unpredictability, Impact and Awareness, these characters offer a colourful, thought-provoking look at the feelings and ideas that shape our world.

Ambassadors of Feeling is a chance to discover how a childhood love of doodling has blossomed into something much bigger. Whether you’re an art lover, a fan of bold creativity or simply curious to see what happens when imagination knows no bounds, this is one exhibition worth adding to your diary.

Address: The Truman Brewery, Shoreditch, East London

Date: 23-25 October 11am - 6pm
