Bamboo Mat Brings Contemporary Nikkei Dining to Canary Wharf This September

Canary Wharf's ever-evolving food scene is about to welcome an exciting new arrival this autumn, as acclaimed Japanese-Peruvian restaurant Bamboo Mat prepares to open its second London location at Wood Wharf this September. Following the success of its Stratford restaurant, the independent favourite is bringing its vibrant take on Nikkei cuisine to one of London's fastest-growing dining destinations.

For those unfamiliar with Nikkei cuisine, the style celebrates the fusion of Japanese culinary techniques with the bold flavours and ingredients of Peru, resulting in colourful dishes that combine precision with creativity. Bamboo Mat has become one of London's leading names in the movement since launching in 2022, earning praise from food critic Grace Dent, who famously described its dishes as "plates of Peruvian joy."

The new restaurant will be considerably larger than its Stratford counterpart, offering space for 82 diners across two floors. Guests will enter via a lively ground floor featuring both a raw bar and cocktail bar before heading upstairs, where a dedicated robata grill, sushi counter and hot kitchen will serve the restaurant's signature menu. The interiors have been designed to reflect the spirit of Nikkei cooking itself, balancing Japanese minimalism with Peruvian warmth. Expect natural wood, tactile materials, soft lighting and textured finishes that create a contemporary yet welcoming setting, equally suited to after-work cocktails, relaxed dinners or weekend celebrations.

The menu will showcase premium sushi alongside Nikkei favourites including ceviche, tiradito, robata dishes and contemporary interpretations of Japanese classics, complemented by a cocktail list inspired by both Asian and Peruvian flavours. Canary Wharf has rapidly established itself as one of London's most exciting dining districts in recent years, with an ever-growing collection of independent restaurants sitting alongside established favourites. Bamboo Mat looks set to become another welcome addition, offering a distinctive culinary experience that brings together two of the world's most celebrated food cultures under one roof.

Address: 1 North Lane, Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf, London E22 3AD

Opening: September 2026
