Review of Don’t Tell Dad: The playful Queen’s Park spot worth the wait

Tucked down the cobbled passage of Lonsdale Road in Queen’s Park, you will find 'Don’t Tell Dad'. Founded by Daniel Land, the restaurant and bakery have built a cult following since opening in January 2025, even earning a spot in The Michelin Guide.

Split across two distinct lateral spaces with separate entrances, the bakery and restaurant operate side by side, each with its own rhythm. The bakery hums from morning, with trays of buns and loaves emerging from a fully open kitchen, while next door the dining room fills steadily with locals settling in for lunch. We visited midday, when both spaces were buzzing.

I began with the widely celebrated Oxtail Crumpet with Dripping Crumb, which absolutely lived up to the hype. Rich, savoury and unapologetically indulgent, it set the tone for what followed. Cod’s roe with crisps was comforting in the best way, while the salt cod crudo delivered freshness and finesse. Another highlight was the pork ragù spooned generously over fried bread with pickled fennel and chilli, a punchy, moreish sharing plate that disappeared far too quickly.

For the main, we shared the pollock with Ratte potatoes, spinach, vermouth and roe. Light yet beautifully executed, it allowed the quality of the fish to shine while still feeling comforting and complete.

Yet for a place famed for its baking, dessert was always going to be the moment of truth, and it did not disappoint. The freshly baked Madeleines are prepared to order, arriving warm after a patient 15-minute wait that felt entirely justified. Golden, delicate and fragrant, they were easily the scene stealer of the meal. We also opted for the decadent chocolate sorbet to finish, intensely rich and deeply satisfying.

With its warm terracotta tones, copper counter and buzzing dining room, Don’t Tell Dad strikes that rare balance of polish and playfulness. One year in, it feels every inch the local institution, mischievous in spirit and serious about good food.
