New Hip-Hop Production Of Romeo And Juliet From Polka Theatre and Beats And Elements

Keeping up with the times and offering innovative new ways for young people to engage with theatre, Polka Theatre are currently premiering a fantastic new hip-hop production of the Shakespeare classic, Romeo and Juliet. Recommended for 9 – 12+ year olds, the performance is running until 14 April 2024 at their Wimbledon venue.

A remixed tale of star -crossed lovers, the piece continues to ask the age old question of ‘how much would you risk for the person you love?, retelling Shakespeare’s most famous story through rap, rhythms, and beautiful harmonies. In collaboration with Beats & Elements’ Conrad Murray and Lakeisha Lynch-Stevens – the team behind ‘Frankenstein: How to make a Monster’, ‘Pied Piper the Hip Hop Family Musical’ and ‘High Rise State of Mind’, the collective has expertly transformed the piece into an easily digestible 60-minute version.

As part of their commitment to make theatre more accessible in the face of budgets being increasingly under pressure, Polka will also tour the show to 12 schools in Merton and across local boroughs as part of a new pilot touring scheme.
